About Gentlemen of the Woods
Technically, the Gentlemen of the Woods story began close to a decade ago: A group of friends who had shelved their musical hobbies years prior in exchange for the challenges of parenting and who were ready once again to lock in and make music.
At some point, sometime after the diaper changing years and before the middle school graduation ceremonies, they agreed to hit the studio and let the cards fall where they may. The result, over the next several years, was an outpouring of catchy, old-timey songs that garnered them a unique and coveted spot in the Ottawa music scene.
Fast forward to the pandemic where GOTW were forced to reluctantly shelve their musical project. Knowing they had a couple of albums worth of great songs yet to be recorded, and more songs in the works, they returned to the studio and are now ready to unleash an updated sound and newly acquired lead guitarist in Mike Zikovitz.
Their work ethic has always ensured a solid live show that highlights their connectedness as a band and the beauty of their songs. Fans can relate to the emotional storytelling which comes through in each song.
The sound has evolved over the years, with compositions reminiscent of classic acts like The Birds and The Band, and of more recent legends of folk rock like Wilco, Dawes and the Avett Brothers.
GOTW are consistently one of the Capital’s premier live music draws, selling out gigs and concerts of all size and description.
Their first two recordings were produced by Ottawa’s Dave Draves at Little Bullhorn Studio. Their all-time stream count on various platforms is approaching 100,000, despite the aforementioned hiatus.
They are currently recording their third album. This time with Jeff Watkins at Breezehill North Studio. While Radiance and This Great Unknown were recorded live off the floor, the band’s upcoming release will be a more intensive studio production which will highlight new instrumentation, as the band substitutes banjo and upright bass with a more electrified approach.
